Spirits in Stone
There is no separation between the spiritual and physical worlds. The spirit exists in humans, yes, but also in animals, plants, rocks, mountains, rivers, and other entities of the physical world – even in light and shadow, in fire, in water and sky.
Human beings have long had a tendency to perceive and endow with a sacred presence anything from trees or stones to prophets. As a sacred tree, or a sacred stone, the tree is no longer a tree and the stone is no longer a stone.
The sacred always manifests itself as a separate reality. We become aware of the sacred when it reveals itself as different from the profane. The presumption is that the divine or some supernatural or spiritual force is revealing itself to the beholder, who thereby, is awed by the privilege.
